Kumarghat: The illegal gambling game known as “Jhandi-Munda” is thriving across the Kumarghat subdivision. Reports suggest that these gambling dens are being operated under the guise of several well-known social organizations within the Kumarghat town area. The mastermind behind this racket is allegedly an individual from the Nalkata area under the jurisdiction of the Manu Police Station.

According to sources, various social organizations are hosting these sessions in their premises in exchange for significant sums of money. The grip of Jhandi-Munda has ensnared a wide demographic, ranging from prominent businessmen and government employees to daily-wage rickshaw pullers. A significant portion of the local youth, lured by the prospect of quick profits with minimal investment, is increasingly gravitating toward this addiction.

The gambling sessions typically begin every evening and continue late into the night. It is reported that lakhs of rupees are wagered in a single session. Bets can range from ₹100 to as high as ₹10,000 at a time. Obsessed with the lure of easy money, many participants are reportedly mortgaging their homes, vehicles, and gold ornaments to fund their gambling habit. Several individuals in the subdivision have already been driven to total financial ruin.

Despite these gambling sessions occurring daily within the Manu and Kumarghat police station limits, the security administration appears indifferent. Locals allege that the police are hesitant to enter certain locations where these sessions are held. Furthermore, gamblers often manage to flee the scene just before any police arrival, leading to growing public suspicion regarding the role of the law enforcement agencies. These illegal sessions are also reportedly being organized under the cover of various local community events.
