0

Khowai, 17 Oct 2022: Around five shops were gutted due to the terrible fire on Monday. The incident happened in Hatkata Bazar of Khowai sub-division. The amount of damage is more than twenty lakh rupees. However, the actual cause of the fire is not known till the writing of this news.

A horrible fire broke out in Khowai Hatkata market at seven on Monday morning. Five shops and two residences were burnt to ashes.

It is known that a fire broke out in Hatkata market under Khowai police station on Monday morning. The fire started from a computer shop adjacent to Hatkata School. The fire spread to the four shops next to it. From there, the fire spread to the two neighboring houses. 5 shops and two residential houses were destroyed in the fire.

Local residents immediately informed the fire brigade. An engine from Khowai Fire Department rushed to the spot. But the intensity of the fire was so intense that an engine of the fire department failed to bring the fire under control. Another engine was brought later. Firefighters have to gain momentum to bring the fire under control. The intensity of the fire was such that almost all the shops and two residential houses were burnt to ashes.

Two houses of Ajay Deb and Mamata Deb’s house were gutted in the fire. On the other hand, among the damaged shops were two large godowns. In one of these, crackers were stored for the occasion of puja. Another was a husk material godown. Eyewitnesses claim that the damage is around one crore rupees.

Tehran escalates missile threat as regional conflict deepens

The Middle East stood on the precipice of a broader regional war on Tuesday as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) formally rejected diplomatic overtures and vowed to deploy its most destructive weaponry to date. The move comes in the wake of a devastating night of airstrikes on the Iranian capital that has left dozens dead and shattered hopes for an immediate ceasefire.

In a stern public statement, the IRGC dismissed recent U.S. intelligence claims suggesting that Iran’s missile infrastructure had been significantly degraded. Contrary to Washington’s assessment, Tehran officials asserted that they are now deploying projectiles in unprecedented numbers. Most notably, the IRGC claimed these new missiles are equipped with warheads exceeding 1 tonne in weight, signaling a massive escalation in strike capability.

The announcement marks a definitive rejection of potential talks with the Trump administration. While President Donald Trump had suggested earlier in the day that the conflict could reach a conclusion “very soon,” his tone shifted dramatically following the IRGC’s announcement. The President warned that any attempt by Iran to block oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz would result in a retaliatory strike “20 times harder” than any previous engagement.

The humanitarian situation has deteriorated sharply as the geography of the conflict expands. Tehran experienced what local reports describe as the “most intense bombardment” of the war overnight. At least 40 people were confirmed killed in strikes concentrated near the city’s Risalat Square.

Simultaneously, Iranian-backed counterattacks have struck targets across the Persian Gulf:

  • Bahrain: One fatality was reported in the capital of Manama.
  • Israel: Two civilians were killed in central Israel following a barrage of projectiles.
  • Regional Assets: Exploits were also reported against U.S. and Israeli interests in Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, further straining regional stability.
Crisis on the Northern Border

To the north, the situation in Lebanon remains dire. The exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah has shown no signs of abating. Official tallies now indicate that Israeli operations in Lebanon have resulted in over 486 deaths, as both sides continue to trade heavy fire across the border.

As the IRGC mobilizes its heavy ordnance and the U.S. prepares for potential maritime disruption, the prospect of a diplomatic off-ramp appears increasingly remote.

Illegal Jhandi-Munda Racket Thrives in Kumarghat; Police Role Questioned

Kumarghat: The illegal gambling game known as “Jhandi-Munda” is thriving across the Kumarghat subdivision. Reports suggest that these gambling dens are being operated under the guise of several well-known social organizations within the Kumarghat town area. The mastermind behind this racket is allegedly an individual from the Nalkata area under the jurisdiction of the Manu Police Station.

According to sources, various social organizations are hosting these sessions in their premises in exchange for significant sums of money. The grip of Jhandi-Munda has ensnared a wide demographic, ranging from prominent businessmen and government employees to daily-wage rickshaw pullers. A significant portion of the local youth, lured by the prospect of quick profits with minimal investment, is increasingly gravitating toward this addiction.

The gambling sessions typically begin every evening and continue late into the night. It is reported that lakhs of rupees are wagered in a single session. Bets can range from ₹100 to as high as ₹10,000 at a time. Obsessed with the lure of easy money, many participants are reportedly mortgaging their homes, vehicles, and gold ornaments to fund their gambling habit. Several individuals in the subdivision have already been driven to total financial ruin.

Despite these gambling sessions occurring daily within the Manu and Kumarghat police station limits, the security administration appears indifferent. Locals allege that the police are hesitant to enter certain locations where these sessions are held. Furthermore, gamblers often manage to flee the scene just before any police arrival, leading to growing public suspicion regarding the role of the law enforcement agencies. These illegal sessions are also reportedly being organized under the cover of various local community events.

AMC Anti-Encroachment Drive Clears Footpaths, Triggers Pushback from Hawkers in Agartala

0

A large-scale eviction and anti-encroachment drive carried out by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday morning sparked protests from sections of street vendors, even as many residents welcomed the move to clear congested footpaths and roads.

The operation followed an announcement by Mayor Deepak Majumder on February 1 that illegal parking on roads and over covered drains would not be allowed from February 3 onwards, and that street vending without valid licences would be prohibited. Acting on the directive, AMC’s enforcement teams began clearing footpaths and removing roadside stalls from early morning hours across key commercial areas of the city.

Allegations of Action Against Licensed Vendors

The drive, however, turned contentious after several hawkers alleged that even licensed vendors were targeted. Vendors claimed their carts and stalls were seized without proper verification of documents.

Biplab Kar, a leader of the BJP-affiliated Hawkers Association, accused the civic body of arbitrary action. “Even vendors with valid licences have had their carts taken away. This is harassment of poor traders who survive on daily earnings,” he said while addressing the media.

Public Opinion Split

The operation drew mixed reactions from residents. Many citizens supported the crackdown, saying footpaths have long been rendered unusable due to encroachments, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads and worsening traffic congestion.

Residents also urged the AMC to ensure uniform implementation across the city, pointing to chronic encroachment in areas such as Gol Bazar, Battala, Kaman Chowmuhani, Math Chowmuhani, Shankar Chowmuhani–Colonel Chowmuhani stretch, Post Office Chowmuhani and the Nagerjala bridge zone. Calls were also made for strict action against illegal parking of two-wheelers and cars and unauthorized roadside businesses.

Calls for Designated Vending Zones

At the same time, several citizens and civil society voices appealed for a more humane approach, suggesting the creation of designated vending zones to protect livelihoods. Proposals included shifting vendors to organised spaces such as the old TRTC complex, allowing hawkers to operate legally without blocking footpaths.

Scepticism also surfaced about the sustainability of the drive. “Such rules are enforced for a few days and then everything returns to how it was,” remarked a local resident, questioning the long-term impact of the campaign.

Mayor Reiterates Stand

Responding to the concerns, Mayor Deepak Majumder reiterated that footpaths are meant exclusively for pedestrians and roads for vehicles. “Footpaths must be kept free for walking. Vehicles will move on roads, not on footpaths,” he said, underlining the administration’s intent to restore urban order and pedestrian safety.

The AMC is yet to issue an official clarification on the allegations regarding the seizure of carts belonging to licensed vendors. Meanwhile, the drive has reignited debate in Agartala over balancing urban discipline with the livelihoods of informal workers, with citizens demanding both strict enforcement and rehabilitation measures.

Delhi High Court Orders Rajpal Yadav to Surrender in Cheque Bounce Case

Actor Rajpal Yadav has been directed by the Delhi High Court to surrender after failing to comply with payment commitments in a cheque bounce case. The court’s order came on Monday, citing the actor’s continued non-adherence to earlier assurances given to the judiciary.

In May 2024, a Delhi sessions court had convicted Rajpal Yadav and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment in connection with a complaint filed by Murali Projects Pvt Ltd over dishonoured cheques. Later in 2024, another bench suspended the sentence after Yadav’s counsel informed the court that the actor intended to resolve the dispute and clear all outstanding dues to the production house.

As part of the settlement proposal, Rajpal Yadav had sought permission to repay a total amount of ₹2.5 crore in two tranches—₹40 lakh by December 16, 2025, and the remaining ₹2.1 crore by January 15 this year. The court had accepted this assurance and granted him relief from immediate incarceration.

However, the actor failed to meet the stipulated conditions. Taking a stern view of the repeated defaults, the Delhi High Court declined to grant any further leniency and ordered him to surrender. The court also expressed strong disapproval of his conduct during the proceedings, noting that no concrete steps were taken to deposit the demand drafts or rectify the alleged errors pointed out in them. The bench rejected the explanations offered for the non-payment and observed that the assurances given earlier had not been honoured.

Assam Police Edge Out Mizoram’s Mamit District FC in Thriller

KAILASAHAR: In an electrifying display of skill and stamina, Assam Police secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory against Mizoram’s Mamit District FC on Monday. The match, held at the Ramakrishna Mahavidyalaya ground, marked the second day of the prestigious General Padmajung Memorial Invitation Football Tournament.

The match kicked off with Assam Police in red and Mamit District FC donning black. After winning the toss and opting for the southern end, Assam Police faced early pressure. The Mizoram side looked dangerous from the start, earning a free kick early on and dominating the offensive for much of the first half. However, despite their relentless attacks, they struggled to breach the Assam defense.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 32nd minute when Assam’s Saining Sangma (No. 36) found the back of the net with a brilliant strike, sending his team into the halftime break with a 1–0 lead.

The second half saw a spirited comeback from the Mizoram outfit. In a moment of individual brilliance, Samson (No. 16) leveled the score, restoring hope for Mamit District FC. The parity, however, was short-lived.

In the 59th minute, the crowd was treated to the goal of the tournament so far. Assam Police’s Jitendra Bordoloi unleashed a spectacular long-range shot from midfield that caught the keeper off-guard, sealing the 2–1 win for the policemen.

Union Budget Signals Economic Drift, Says Tripura Opposition Leader

0

Tripura Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday criticised the Union Budget 2026, alleging that it underlines a weakening economy and fails to offer meaningful support to ordinary citizens.

Reacting to the budget shortly after it was presented, Chaudhury said the government’s past performance left little room for confidence that the new proposals would address public concerns. He remarked that, much like earlier years, the budget relied heavily on slogans and optimistic claims rather than concrete policy measures.

Pointing to the revised estimates, the CPI(M) leader argued that the Centre had fallen short of its own revenue targets across several categories. This, he said, had a direct impact on expenditure and reflected poor financial planning.

Chaudhury also accused the government of neglecting critical sectors such as agriculture and social welfare. He claimed allocations for fertiliser subsidies, irrigation and other people-centric programmes were inadequate, while policy priorities appeared to favour corporate interests.

Taking aim at the Centre’s broader economic approach, he alleged that corporate loan waivers were being prioritised even as common people continued to face high excise duties on essential goods. According to him, this imbalance had added to public hardship.

He further claimed that investment levels in both public and private sectors were on the decline. Referring to schemes like VBGRAMG, he said that shifting part of the financial responsibility to state governments without adequate central support showed a lack of seriousness in implementation.

Chaudhury also highlighted that many states were struggling to meet Goods and Services Tax collection targets set at the start of the financial year, which he said was another indicator of economic stress.

Overall, the CPI(M) leader described the budget as disappointing, asserting that it offered no fresh vision for growth or relief for the wider population.

“Our Homes Are Not Test Sites”: South Tripura Villagers Rise Against Sudden Gas Blasting

Residents of Takka Tulsi in South Tripura erupted in protest after what they describe as sudden and forceful gas exploration activities turned their peaceful villages into zones of fear. Villagers say an outside agency began high-intensity blasting without any prior warning, consultation, or consent, leaving families terrified and homes visibly damaged.

According to protesters, repeated explosions shook the area throughout the day, making it impossible to stay indoors. “The ground was trembling, the noise was unbearable, and cracks started appearing on our walls,” said several residents, adding that such blasting is extremely dangerous in the region’s hilly and fragile terrain.

Villagers were clear that they are not against development or natural gas exploration in Tripura. “We are not anti-project,” they said, “but we cannot accept being treated like we don’t exist.” Their anger stems from what they call complete disregard for local communities, with deep drilling and dynamite blasting carried out without safety briefings or environmental assessment shared with residents.

Tensions escalated when villagers approached agency officials to voice their concerns. Protesters allege that instead of engaging in dialogue, the agency called the police, resulting in the detention of several locals. This move only intensified public outrage, with residents calling it intimidation rather than resolution.

A similar scene unfolded in Purba Takka Tulsi ADC Village, where villagers collectively surrounded the exploration team and demanded an immediate halt to blasting. Facing unified resistance, the agency was ultimately forced to suspend work and withdraw from the area.

Protesters also objected to the detention of a local landowner at whose site drilling was underway. Following mounting pressure, the individual was released, and villagers say the incident exposed how easily locals are targeted when they speak up.

Residents say the episode proves that unity is their only protection. They are now demanding that any future exploration must involve transparent communication, community consent, and strict safety safeguards. “Development cannot come at the cost of our lives and homes,” villagers said, warning that they will continue to resist any project imposed without their participation.

The protests have reignited broader concerns about how large-scale resource projects are pushed through in sensitive regions, often ignoring the voices of those who live on the land.

Kolkata Restaurant Row Sparks Debate on Respect for Hindu Dietary Beliefs

0

A controversy erupted in Kolkata after a social media influencer alleged that a well-known restaurant on Park Street mistakenly served beef instead of mutton, triggering outrage among many Hindus who view the incident as a serious violation of religious and cultural beliefs.

YouTuber and actor Sayak Chakraborty shared a video claiming that he and his friends were served cow meat at the iconic Olypub, despite ordering mutton steak. According to him, the group consumed the dish believing it to be mutton, only to later realise it was beef—an issue of deep sensitivity for a large section of Hindus, for whom the cow is sacred.

In the video, Chakraborty is seen confronting the restaurant staff and expressing anguish over the lapse. He stated that the matter was not merely about a wrong order, but about disregard for religious sentiments and food practices that many Hindus strictly follow. “This is not just a mistake, this is about faith,” he said, questioning how such an error could occur at a reputed establishment.

Following the incident, a First Information Report was filed at Park Street police station. The waiter involved, identified as Sheikh Nasiruddin, was reportedly arrested under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with acts intended to outrage religious feelings.

The episode has since sparked a wider discussion online, with many Hindus demanding greater accountability from restaurants, clearer menu disclosures, and respect for religious dietary restrictions. At the same time, several voices have urged calm, calling for the issue to be addressed through lawful and fair processes without communal hostility.

The restaurant management has not yet issued a detailed public statement on how the alleged mix-up occurred.

Budget Talks Up Manufacturing, Leaves Ordinary Investors Wanting More

India’s latest Union Budget put manufacturing in the spotlight, promising support for future-facing sectors such as semiconductors, biopharma and renewable energy. But for many investors and ordinary market participants, the measures fell short of expectations, triggering a sharp sell-off in equities.

Stock markets fell nearly 2% on budget day, their worst performance in six years, as the government avoided big-ticket reforms and instead raised the securities transaction tax on derivatives. For small investors and traders, the higher tax on futures and options added to the disappointment and dampened sentiment.

While the government highlighted India’s resilience amid global uncertainty and steep US tariffs, concerns remain. Foreign investors have pulled out about $22 billion from Indian equities since last January, and the rupee has slipped to record lows, raising worries about confidence in the economy.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced tariff cuts on capital goods, doubled funding for an electronics manufacturing scheme, and eased rules for foreign companies like Apple working with Indian suppliers. Manufacturing priorities were outlined across seven sectors, including pharmaceuticals, textiles and rare-earth magnets.

However, economists and market experts said the budget lacked bold moves that could have reassured investors or sparked immediate optimism. For the wider public, the budget signalled intent, but not the decisive push many were hoping for to strengthen jobs, markets and growth.
