Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga inaugurates two projects under PMJVK scheme

0

Aizawl, 11 Jan 2023:

Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Tuesday inaugurated two projects under Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) and a football academy centre in western Mizoram’s Mamit, the lone aspiration district in the state, bordering Tripura and Bangladesh.

The CM inaugurated a Rs. 549.91 lahks synthetic turf football ground and a football academy centre, which was constructed at the cost of Rs. 80 lahks under the joint venture of Mizoram State Sports Council and TATA Trusts at Kawrthah village, about 40 km from the district headquarters of Mamit. The synthetic turf football ground is part of the residential school project under the PMJVK scheme.

Zoramthanga also inaugurated the Laldenga synthetic turf football ground, which was constructed at the cost of Rs.  532.50 lakh under the PMJVK scheme at Tuidam village in the same district.

Inaugurating the projects, Zoramthanga said the state government is making massive efforts to upgrade football grounds in the state with funds earmarked by the Centre for such projects even though many important projects have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that Mamit district is gradually witnessing development in various fields.

“Development is currently taking place in the western part of the state and will continue to do so in the future,” Zoramthanga said.

The chief minister said the state government is also making efforts to ensure that football academy centres, which are being constructed jointly with TATA Trusts, yield good results.

He expressed hope that the projects would benefit the young in many ways.

Laying emphasis on the importance of good health, Zoramthanga said that drugs and alcohol, which have greatly impacted the health of youngsters, should be fought on a war footing.

Sports minister Robert Romawia Royte and area constituency MLA Lalrindika Ralte of Congress also graced the inaugural functions.

According to official sources, the Mizoram government received an administrative approval of Rs. 3,286.34 lakh for the construction of a residential school at Kawrthah under the PMJVK scheme in 2019-2020.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs. Rs. 549.91 lahks for the artificial turf ground as part of the project, the sources said.

The Centre also sanctioned Rs. 532.50 lahks for the construction of the Laldenga Astro turf football ground at Tuidam, it said.

Officials also said that Mizoram State Sports Council in collaboration with TATA Trusts has set up a grassroots football academy to promote grassroots football in the state.

60 training centres are being set up across the state under the joint football academy for a one-year period, they said.

NASA mission spots 2nd Earth-size world within ‘habitable zone’

0

NASA mission has discovered a second Earth-sized, rocky planet within the habitable zone of its star — the range of distances where liquid water could occur on a planet’s surface.

Using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the astronomers found “TOI 700 e” which is one of only a few systems with multiple, small, habitable-zone planets that we know of.

Astronomers previously discovered three planets in this system, called TOI 700 b, c, and d.

Planet d also orbits in the habitable zone, but the scientists needed an additional year of TESS observations to discover TOI 700 e.

“That makes the TOI 700 system an exciting prospect for additional follow up. Planet e is about 10 per cent smaller than planet d, so the system also shows how additional TESS observations help us find smaller and smaller worlds,” said Emily Gilbert, a postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California who led the work.

TOI 700 is a small, cool M dwarf star located around 100 light-years away in the southern constellation Dorado.

In 2020, Gilbert and others announced the discovery of the Earth-size, habitable-zone planet d, which is on a 37-day orbit, along with two other worlds.

The innermost planet, TOI 700 b, is about 90 per cent Earth’s size and orbits the star every 10 days.

TOI 700 c is over 2.5 times bigger than Earth and completes an orbit every 16 days.

“The planets are probably tidally locked, which means they spin only once per orbit such that one side always faces the star, just as one side of the Moon is always turned toward Earth,” the US space agency said in a statement late on Tuesday.

TOI 700 e, which may also be tidally locked, takes 28 days to orbit its star, placing planet e between planets c and d in the so-called optimistic habitable zone.

Scientists define the optimistic habitable zone as the range of distances from a star where liquid surface water could be present at some point in a planet’s history.

This area extends to either side of the conservative habitable zone, the range where researchers hypothesize liquid water could exist over most of the planet’s lifetime. TOI 700 d orbits in this region.

“Finding other systems with Earth-size worlds in this region helps planetary scientists learn more about the history of our own solar system,” said scientists.

Gilbert presented the result on behalf of her team at the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, the US.

A paper about the newly discovered planet was accepted by The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik builds world’s largest hockey stick

Bhubaneswar, 11 Jan 2023:

When the people arrive at the Biju Patnaik Airport here, they are sure to be welcomed by beautiful sand art that depicts the mythologically-significant monuments of the erstwhile state.

This time, not only will the visitors traveling for the most-awaited FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela be treated to sand sculpture at the airport, but one can also witness the world’s largest hockey sculpture erected on the banks of the Mahanadi river at Cuttack, where the ‘celebration’ event is scheduled for on January 11 to mark the opening of the mega hockey event starting 13th January.

Known for his globally popular sand art, Sudarshan Pattnaik this time chose to create a 105-feet long hockey stick, using 5000 hockey balls. The sand artist used over five tonnes of sand for the sculpture which also showcases the newly built Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.

Having taken two days to complete this incredible art installation, Sudarshan Pattnaik has once again showcased the passion Odisha has for the national sport.

“There is a festive atmosphere in every village you travel to in Odisha because of the World Cup. It is a very special event for the people of Odisha and there are celebrations everywhere. To welcome everyone to this beautiful state, we wanted to create something unique this time, that’s why we thought of using hockey balls and creating this installation,” said Pattnaik in a media release, issued by Hockey India.

It took Sudarshan and his team of 15 students two full days to complete the installation and it will be up for display all of January 11 when thousands will throng the Barabati Stadium to catch a glimpse of Bollywood stars who will perform during the opening ceremony.

“During the previous World Cup, we had installed sand art at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium and the art work depicted the major monuments of Odisha like Konark. This time we have used the installation to welcome all the 16 participating teams to Odisha and we have created 16 national flags in the installation,” added an elated Pattnaik about this unique creation.

Notably, Pattnaik has been awarded Padma Shri in 2014, for his participation in a globally renowned sand art competition. Till now, he has participated in more than 60 international sand art championships as well as festivals.

The sand artist has not only represented India in such competitions but also won several prizes for the country. It is worth noting that the artist uses his creative expression to spread a social message every time. He also holds the Guinness Record (2017) for building the tallest sand castle at 48 feet.

Severe winter storms in California leave 16 dead

0

At least 16 people have died in a barrage of severe winter storms in California as the most populous state in the US braces for more floods and mudslides.

The death toll reached on 16 Tuesday after two motorists died in a crash earlier in the day on Highway 99 in Tulare county when a tree that had been struck by lightning fell on the road, Xinhua news agency reported.

This toll is higher than the lives lost in wildfires in the past two years combined.

“Our message to Californians is simple: be hyper-vigilant,” California Governor Gavin Newsom in a statement, adding that “there are still several days of severe winter weather ahead and we need all Californians to be alert and heed the advice of emergency officials”.

President Joe Biden on Sunday night approved Newsom’s request for a federal emergency declaration, activating the full weight of the federal government to support the state’s storm response and recovery efforts.

Winter storms continued to hit California with heavy rains, causing flooding, road closures, power outages and mandatory evacuations in many regions across the state.

Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate Southern California’s Montecito on Monday.

A total of 23 people were killed in January 2018 when a massive mudslide caused by heavy rains swept through the coastal community and destroyed 130 homes.

Newsom noted that Monday marked five years since the deadly Montecito mudslide as the entire coastal community in Santa Barbara County faced evacuations again.

“It’s a solemn reminder of how quickly conditions can change,” said the Governor.

Over 160,000 homes and businesses in California were still without power as of Tuesday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us, a website which collects live power outage data from utilities all over the country.

The National Weather Service warned “another high impact heavy precipitation event” on Tuesday across much of California with areas of thunderstorms and very gusty winds.

“Back-to-back atmospheric river events continue to hammer California and pose flooding threats. Radar showed widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across much of California this afternoon,” said the agency.
