Bengal escapes cyclone Sitrang’s devastating effect, weather improving

0

October 25, 2022

The people of West Bengal, especially those in the coastal and Gangetic belts, heaved a sigh of relief, after escaping the onslaught on cyclone Sitrang which made landfall only in between Tinkona Island and Sandwip in Barisal district of Bangladesh.

According to the IMD, Sitrang has already lost much of its strength and has been converted into a deep depression, which will subsequently lose strength over the next few hours.

Although the coastal districts of West Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas witnessed gusty winds and light to medium rainfall, there was no report of any major mishap or devastation.

The impact was also not much in the Sunderbans, which was perceived to be most vulnerable.

The least impacted was the state capital of Kolkata, which witnessed sporadic drizzles throughout Monday, thus not dampening the mood of Kali Puja and Diwali much.

However, as a precautionary measure the state administration has barred fishermen from moving to the deep sea for fishing.

Similar restrictions have been imposed on tourists in seaside resorts.

Meanwhile, weather conditions have started improving in different pockets of the state since Tuesday morning.

According to IMD predictions, the condition will improve further in the next four hours.

Bright sunshine is evident over Kolkata already at the time the report was filed. At the same time, the Sitrang effect had subsequently brought down the temperature in and around Kolkata.

As per predictions of the IMB office in Kolkata, the maximum and maximum and minimum temperatures in the city will be 29 degrees Celsius and 23 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Monday was 24.7 degrees, seven degrees below the normal, while the minimum was 21.5 degree Celsius.

Sunak to become UK’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister

0

25 October 2022

Rishi Sunak on Monday is all set to make history as Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister after being elected unopposed as the new leader of the governing Conservative Party on Diwali, following Penny Mordaunt’s withdrawal from the race.

The 42-year-old former chancellor, a devout Hindu, was comfortably in the lead, having secured the public backing of over half the 357 Tory MPs– way above the 100 minimum required to make the shortlist. In time for the 1400 local time Monday deadline, Sir Graham Brady, chair of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, announced in the Parliament complex that he had received only one nomination and therefore Sunak is the winner of the leadership contest.

This means Sunak is poised to walk through the door of 10 Downing Street in London after an audience with King Charles III in Buckingham Palace, the timeframe of which will become known soon.

Earlier, high-profile Tory MPs switched allegiance from Johnson to Sunak, including former Home Secretary Priti Patel and cabinet ministers James Cleverly and Nadhim Zahawi.

Sunak’s victory marks a remarkable turnaround in political fortunes for the former finance minister, who lost out to outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss just last month after his popularity among party colleagues did not translate in the wider Tory membership vote.
The UK-born son of Indian-origin general practitioner father Yashvir and pharmacist mother Usha had spoken extensively of his migrant roots during the last campaign and also referenced making history by lighting Diwali diyas at 11 Downing Street as the first Indian-origin Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty, is the daughter of N.R. Narayana Murthy (76) who co-founded tech giant Infosys in 1981.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the world leaders who greeted Sunak. He said in a tweet: “Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership.”

With India and the UK engaged in the final phase of troubled negotiations for a free trade agreement, there will be considerable interest in India to see whether Sunak, the former finance minister in Boris Johnson’s government, will be able to finalise a trade deal speedily.

Rains trigger traffic congestion, dampen Diwali festivities in Dimapur

0

Nagaland, 25 Oct 2022

With cyclone Sitrang’s formation developing in the Bay of Bengal, incessant rains continued to lash Dimapur and other parts of the State throughout the day dampening Diwali celebrations.

While the rains played a spoilsport to the celebrations, the State’s commercial hub witnessed massive traffic snarls on several roads across the town on Monday.

Though traffic congestion on the first working day of the week is a normal phenomenon, the untimely rains only compounded the problem further. Traffic personnel in their raincoats had a harrowing time managing traffic at major road intersections. Some narrow lanes witnessed two-three rows of vehicles bumper-to-bumper, which added more to the jam. In certain area, traffic crawled at a snail’s pace.
Meanwhile, the relentless downpour affected celebration of the festival of lights among the citizens.

Speaking to Nagaland Post, Lions Club Dimapur vice-president Basu Damani admitted that the untimely rain dampened the Diwali spirits. He however mentioned that some people celebrated the festival in their houses, inviting friends and relatives and enjoying food and sweets. He stated that they did not let the rains take away the enthusiasm of Diwali by lightning earthen lamps under roof and preparing bhog for the puja.

On the other hand, bursting of firecrackers was seen in many parts of the town, adding to the festive spirit that celebrated the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and truth over falsehood. It may be mentioned that rains in Nagaland and other North-eastern States, have been triggered by cyclone Sitrang over Bay of Bengal.
