Maharaja Pradyot Announces ‘Hunger Strike Unto Death’ for Constitutional Solutions

0

Tripura, Feb 27: Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, the chief of the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) Motha Party, declared on Tuesday that a ‘hunger strike unto death’ would commence on February 28 in support of the demand for constitutional solutions to the issues faced by the indigenous people of Tripura.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the former chairman of Tipra Motha and a royal scion, visited the Hathai Kotor, the designated location for the hunger strike demonstration.

Speaking to the media persons, Maharaja Pradyot Manikya Debbarma emphasized that no political flags, including those of his own party, would be permitted during the hunger strike. He urged supporters to participate not as politicians or party workers but as members of the Tiprasa community.

“I want no political flags, not even Tipra Motha’s flag to be put up during our hunger strike. There will only be Tiprasa’s emotions. This is my message to all our followers to come to the strike as Tiprasa and not as a politician or party worker. This is a fight for Tiprasa and not any political party,” stated Debbarma.

He disclosed that he had been in Delhi for the past 10 days, waiting to meet representatives of the central government. Expressing frustration, he mentioned that similar efforts had been made the previous year, with AK Mishra, a representative of the central government, visiting Agartala and engaging with various stakeholders, including Tipra Motha.

Debbarma highlighted the urgency of finding a resolution, stating, “Everyone is saying that it will be done. But when will it be done? We have no choice but to say that it will be done to the poor people but when?” He stressed that until a constitutional solution is reached, the indigenous population in Tripura, constituting 95 percent of the state, will continue facing challenges, particularly regarding land rights.

“Till now, they don’t have their land, not any land patta. All are residing in the forest land, which is government land (Khaas land),” Debbarma lamented.

Announcing an indefinite hunger strike until a “permanent solution is announced,” Debbarma affirmed, “I will fast to death till I get something respectable either from the Congress or from the BJP. Whoever is willing to help us, we will talk to them.” The hunger strike is poised to serve as a pressing call for constitutional measures addressing the concerns of Tripura’s indigenous population.

Cable TV Broadcast Disruption Halt in Tripura: Information and Broadcasting Minister Assures Resolution

0

Agartala, Feb 6: In a proactive move, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha took the lead role in resolving the disruption of cable television channels in the state. The interruption occurred on Monday due to a failure to obtain registration under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs under the Indian Companies Act 2013.

Dr. Saha’s intervention proved instrumental, prompting Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur to ensure that local channel transmissions on cable networks would not be disrupted. This decision took into consideration the inadequate broadcast infrastructure in the state.

Tripura currently lacks satellite television channels, relying on more than 30 small and micro channels operating through multi-system operators (MSOs) on cable networks.

In November 2022, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had advised all MSOs nationwide to register all Platform Service channels within a year, a directive that went unheeded. Subsequently, an order last week mandated MSOs to cease the transmission of all non-registered channels from Monday, sparking nationwide concern, particularly in states like Tripura, where cable networks serve as the backbone of television service.

The Assembly of Journalists (AoJ), the apex media body in Tripura, took up the matter with Chief Minister Dr. Saha, seeking his intervention to resolve the situation.

Dr. Saha engaged with Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, who, following a meeting with a media delegation from Tripura, assured them that the matter would be looked into with the best interests of the media community in mind. He emphasized that the objective was to bring local channels into a legal framework to prevent fake news, scandalous and malicious content, and unethical journalism.

The delegation, during their discussion with Minister Thakur, requested an extension of at least six months for registering Platform Service Channels operating through MSOs. They also sought permission to continue cable channel transmissions until they could complete the registration process.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the media industry in Tripura, the delegation urged Minister Thakur to support the initiation of satellite TV channels in the state. They highlighted the impossibility of operating such channels due to infrastructure unavailability and poor capital formation in the media industry.

While cable channels may not have the financial capacity to build extensive infrastructure, they play a crucial role as important stakeholders in governance, a fact the delegation emphasized and urged to be recognized. Minister Thakur reassured them that a comprehensive solution would be sought soon.

Tipra Motha Party Supremo Reaffirms Commitment to Tribal Constitutional Demands

Agartala, Feb 5: In a significant announcement during the third-anniversary program of the Tipra Motha Party at Malancha Niwas in Agartala, Tipra Motha Party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman assured party workers that the constitutional demands pledged for the tribal section would be earnestly fulfilled.

Addressing the gathering, Pradyot reflected on the post-election scenario, recalling instances where skepticism surrounded the identity of AK Mishra. However, he highlighted that AK Mishra later arrived in the state, and the people adhered to his directives, emphasizing the party’s steadfast demand for Greater Tipraland and the pursuit of a constitutional resolution.

Pradyot also acknowledged the challenges faced by Bru Reang refugees who had migrated from Mizoram to Tripura. Despite initial attempts to evict them back to Mizoram, Pradyot’s intervention with the government resulted in the successful resettlement of Bru Reang refugees in Tripura.

Rejecting the option of joining the BJP, Pradyot emphasized his commitment to justice for the people, asserting that Tipra Motha provided an avenue for the people’s voices in the assembly through 13 MLAs. He highlighted the ongoing issues affecting tribals, such as inadequate education and healthcare services, leading to fatalities and the need for tribal empowerment.

He emphasized the need for justice and empowerment among the tribal community, asserting that as long as there is unity (“Thansa”) among tribals, their goals cannot be thwarted.

In a critical stance, Pradyot criticized the President of TBSE for allegedly directing Kokborok exams to be conducted in a specific script. On this occasion, he called for Kokborok exams to be administered in the Roman script, advocating for inclusivity and linguistic diversity.

Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s statements underscore the Tipra Motha Party’s commitment to advocating for the constitutional rights of the tribal population and addressing crucial issues affecting their well-being and representation in the political landscape.

Legal Action Awaits against TBSE President Over Script Controversy: Opposition leader

In a significant turn of events, parents are gearing up to file a legal case against the President of Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), Dhananjay Ganachoudhury, and Exam Center Supervisors if the president fails to withdraw a controversial verbal announcement. The announcement, disclosed during a recent meeting with exam center supervisors, has sparked concerns and opposition from various quarters.

Opposition leader Animesh Debbarma addressed the media during a press conference on Friday, revealing the contentious details of the meeting convened by TBSE president Ganachoudhury. In the meeting, attended by prospective center supervisors for upcoming secondary and higher secondary examinations, the TBSE chairman reportedly instructed that students sitting for the exams should refrain from writing their answers in Roman script. Furthermore, he directed the center supervisors to enforce this instruction during the examinations.

Debbarma went on to express his concern over the president’s threat to file cases against exam center supervisors if students were found writing in Roman script. Such directives, according to the opposition leader, have raised significant worries. Historically, some students in the state have opted to write exams in Bengali, while others have utilized Roman script. Despite this, the TBSE president insisted on the new restriction, citing a lack of infrastructure to evaluate answer sheets written in Roman script.

The opposition leader highlighted the inconsistency in the president’s stance, noting that a few years ago, the state’s teachers successfully evaluated answer sheets in Roman script. Debbarma also criticized the president for allegedly undermining the Chief Minister’s statement in the assembly, where the Chief Minister asserted that there was no script policy in the state.

Calling for government intervention, Debbarma urged authorities to take action against the TBSE president. He threatened legal consequences, stating that if students were not allowed to write exams in Roman script, parents would file a case against the Board President, center supervisors, and head teachers.

The controversy surrounding script preferences in exams has ignited a tense situation, prompting concerns among parents and opposition leaders who are now taking a firm stand against the perceived restrictions imposed by the TBSE.

Land Dispute Between Union of India and State of Tripura Resolved: Supreme Court Disposes of the Case

0

Agartala, Feb 03: In a significant development, the longstanding land dispute between the Union of India and the State of Tripura over the Assam Rifles Ground reached a resolution today, as informed by the Apex Court on February 2. The Division Bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra disposed of the matter after being apprised of a settlement between the parties involved.

Case Title: UNION OF INDIA vs. STATE OF TRIPURA., Diary No.- 11922 – 2015

The disputed land, currently in possession of the Assam Rifles under the Ministry of Defence, Union of India, witnessed a discrepancy in Revenue Entries. Despite the land belonging to Assam Rifles, Tripura’s Revenue Department had recorded it as “Tripura Sarkar.” This prompted the Union to file an original suit under Article 131 of the Indian Constitution in the Supreme Court, seeking, among other reliefs, a permanent injunction against the State of Tripura from claiming title to the land.

The Union contended that the land, originally designated for ‘Tripura Rifles,’ was transferred to ‘Assam Rifles’ in 1951 through a Presidential Order. The State, however, argued that it had the statutory authority to correct Revenue entries and challenged the maintainability of the suit under Article 131.

Despite the legal tussle, both parties have now reached a settlement. According to the agreed terms, the Government of Tripura will be permitted to conduct Ceremonial Functions, including Republic Day Parade and Independence Day Celebrations, on the disputed ground. However, the State government must make a formal request for such events. Additionally, the necessary correction in the Revenue records, rectifying the entries in favor of Assam Rifles, is mandated to be completed within three months.

With this amicable resolution, the Supreme Court has disposed of the suit, bringing an end to the protracted land dispute between the Union of India and the State of Tripura. -(livelaw)

Poonam Pandey is alive appears in cervical cancer awareness video

0

Mumbai, Feb 3: “I am here, alive. Cervical cancer didn’t claim me,” Poonam Pandey said on Saturday, a day after the news of her death from the disease dominated the news cycle and led to intense debate on social media.
It turns out the news of her death was fake, a stunt pulled off by the actor and her team to spread “critical awareness” about cervical cancer.
While many media houses went ahead with the news, PTI in its reporting never confirmed the death.
In a video, posted on her official Instagram page, Pandey said, “I feel compelled to share something significant with you all – I am here, alive.”
“Cervical cancer didn’t claim me, but tragically, it has claimed the lives of thousands of women who stemmed from a lack of knowledge on how to tackle this disease… Together, let’s strive to put an end to the devastating impact of the disease and bring #DeathToCervicalCancer,” the 32-year-old added.
In a follow-up video, Pandey apologised for the stunt but said she wanted to spread awareness about the disease.
“I am sorry I caused this tear and I am sorry to those I have hurt. My intention: to shock everyone into the conversation that we are not talking enough about cervical cancer,” she said.
The news of her “supposed demise due to Cervical cancer” serves a “greater purpose”, Pandey added.
“While I do understand how you would have perceived this in bad taste, I also implore you to consider the greater cause. Before passing judgement on the act, I urge you to recognise the alarming concern burdening women worldwide. The sheer lack of awareness surrounding this issue was the mere reason that compelled me to take this unconventional step,” she said.
The news of her death also came a day after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the government’s plans to focus on vaccination against cervical cancer for girls aged 9 to 14 as part of her interim Budget 2024.
“Just the day before, the Union Budget highlighted the cause as well but I can say with certainty that only a small fraction would’ve registered it. It’s intriguing how such vital information was at the forefront yet failed to capture the press attention until the narrative took a dramatic turn with the news of my death to Cervical cancer,” Pandey said and deemed her intervention “necessary”.
On Friday, the actor’s team made the shock announcement on Instagram that Pandey, a model, influencer and sometime actor known for her bold statements and appearances, had died of cervical cancer.
When contacted for the confirmation of the death, the actor’s publicist said she died in her hometown but was not forthcoming with details about her battle with the disease as well as when and where she passed away.
Pandey is not new to such publicity stunts. She hit the headlines in 2011 by declaring that she would strip if India won the cricket World Cup.
The post on her Instagram page on Friday read, “Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness.”
“In this time of grief, we would request for privacy while we remember her fondly for all that we shared,” the statement read.
The doubts began soon after with several Instagram followers saying the news could well be fake because she was last seen only three days ago in Goa and frequently before that as well.
Some also questioned the timing of
Later in the day, PR agency Picture N Kraft released a statement, saying, “This is to place on record that we have received a call from her family member this morning regarding her sudden demise (as posted on her official Insta id). We are waiting for further information.”
Her death was condoled by her “Lock Upp” co-contestant Faruqui and host Kangana Ranaut.
Pandey, who made her Bollywood debut in 2013 with “Nasha”, also featured in little known films such as “Love Poison”, “Malini & Co” and “Aa Gaya Hero”. She also participated in two popular reality shows, “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 4” in 2011 and “Lock Upp” in 2022.
In November 2020, she and her husband were arrested for shooting an objectionable video and allegedly trespassing on government property in Goa.
Before that, in May 2020, she was booked for violating Covid norms in Mumbai.
Cervical cancer is the second most common in women in India and makes up for close to 18 per cent of the new cancer cases, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO’s cancer agency.

US carries out retaliatory strikes on Iranian-linked militia targets in Iraq and Syria

0

The US conducted major airstrikes on 85 targets across seven locations in Iraq and Syria on Friday, the start of what will likely be a series of larger-scale US strikes on Iranian-backed militias who have carried out attacks on US troops in the Middle East.

The retaliatory strikes – which lasted 30 minutes and were successful, according to the White House – came in response to a drone strike by Iran-backed militants on a US military outpost in Jordan on Sunday, which killed three US service members and wounded more than 40 others.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that the US military response “will continue at times and places of our choosing.”

“The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. But let all those who might seek to do us harm know this: If you harm an American, we will respond,” Biden said.

The strikes on Friday were markedly more significant than previous attacks on Iranian-backed militias over the last several weeks, which have primarily focused on weapons storage or training facilities. But the administration is threading a needle – they want to deter and stop further attacks but avoid a full-scale conflict with Iran breaking out in a region already roiled by the continuing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

US Central Command confirmed in a statement that airstrikes were carried out in Iraq and Syria “against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups.”

“US military forces struck more than 85 targets, with numerous aircraft to include long-range bombers flown from the United States. The airstrikes employed more than 125 precision munitions,” the statement said.

“The facilities that were struck included command and control operations, centers, intelligence centers, rockets, and missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities of militia groups and their IRGC sponsors who facilitated attacks against US and Coalition forces,” the statement added.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the strikes are “the start of our response.”

“We believe that the strikes were successful,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said. – (CNN)
