Moosewala Murder: First Person Arrested Sent To 5-Day Police Custody

Chandigarh, 31 May 2022: Manpreet Singh, the first arrest in the killing of famed singer-turned-politician Sidhu Moosewala was produced before a Mansa court in Punjab on Tuesday and was sent to police custody for five days.

A team of Punjab Police along with sleuths of the Uttarakhand STF had arrested Manpreet Singh from Dehradun on Monday. He was suspected to have provided “key logistical support” in the murder of the Punjabi singer.

Singh, a resident of Faridkot in Punjab, was reportedly trying to hide among pilgrims, who were scheduled to go on a yatra to Hemkund in Chamoli district when the police nabbed him.

Meanwhile, the cremation of Moosewala was held in his native village Moosa in Mansa district on Tuesday.

After much delay to get the consent of his father, the postmortem of Moosewala was conducted by a five-member forensic team of doctors from Patiala and Faridkot medical colleges at the Civil Hospital in Mansa.

Tens of thousands of Moosewala’s fans and followers gathered outside his palatial bungalow to pay tributes and attended his funeral.

Officials told IANS the singer-turned-politician’s wailing parents gave consent for the postmortem of their only child after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced to set up a judicial commission under a sitting judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court to probe his killing.

Moosewala’s song ‘The Last Ride’ was reportedly a tribute to rapper Tupac Shakur, who was shot dead in his car at the age of 25 in 1996.

Moosewala, whose real name was Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, 29, was shot dead while driving his vehicle in Mansa district on Sunday, a day after his security cover was withdrawn.

One-fourth global Internet users susceptible to attacks: Study

30 May 2022: About a quarter of the world’s Internet users live in countries that are more susceptible than previously thought to targeted attacks on their Internet infrastructure, find researchers.

The structure of the Internet can differ dramatically in different parts of the world.

According to computer scientists at the University of California San Diego, who surveyed 75 countries, 34 nations have transit ecosystems that render them particularly exposed, where a single autonomous system is privy to traffic destined to over 40 per cent of their IP addresses.

In many developed countries, like the US, a large number of Internet providers compete to provide services for a large number of users. These networks are directly connected to one another and exchange content, a process known as direct peering. All the providers can also plug directly into the world’s Internet infrastructure.

“But a large portion of the Internet doesn’t function with peering agreements for network connectivity,” said Alexander Gamero-Garrido, from UC San Diego.

In other nations, many of them still developing countries, most users rely on a handful of providers for Internet access, and one of these providers serves an overwhelming majority of users. Not only that, but those providers rely on a limited number of companies called transit autonomous systems to get access to the global Internet and traffic from other countries. Researchers found that often these transit autonomous system providers are state owned.

This, of course, makes countries with this type of Internet infrastructure particularly vulnerable to attacks because all that is needed is to cripple a small number of transit autonomous systems. These countries, of course, are also vulnerable if a main Internet provider experiences outages.

In the worst case scenario, one transit autonomous system serves all users. Cuba and Sierra Leone are close to this state of affairs. By contrast, Bangladesh went from only two to over 30 system providers, after the government opened that sector of the economy to private enterprise.

This underlines, the researchers noted, the importance of government regulation when it comes to the number of Internet providers and transit autonomous systems available in a country.

Google Assistant will recognise your voice command soon

30 May 2022: Google Assistant will soon recognise your voice as the company is working on a personalised speech recognition feature.

According to 9to5Google, the tool will help Google Assistant get “better at recognising your frequent words and names.”

The “Personalised speech recognition” feature will appear in Google Assistant settings.

The feature description reads: “Store audio recordings on this device to help Google Assistant get better at recognising what you say. Audio stays on this device and can be deleted any time by turning off personalised speech recognition”.

The upcoming feature looks to expand AT and ML-based improvements beyond “Hey Google” to your actual Assistant commands, “especially those with names (using your voice to message contacts) and frequently spoken words”.

It’s still not clear when this capability will launch.

The feature will allow more advanced recognition of commands and contact names.

Owing to privacy concerns, Google will give users an option in settings to opt-out of the personalised speech recognition if they don’t want their voice to be stored.

The virtual assistant software application can now also warn users when they need to change their password, and can even help them change it.

The company had said the new experience would roll out gradually, but it is only now that more than a handful of users have started to get it on their devices.
