China leading the world in EVs, renewable energy: Musk

New Delhi, 30 May 2022:Elon Musk on Monday said that whatever the world thinks of China, the country is leading the race in electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy.

Tesla has one of its Gigafactory in Shanghai that is currently facing logistics issues due to Covid-19 lockdowns and is slowly getting back on track.

In a tweet, Musk said: “Few seem to realise that China is leading the world in renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. Whatever you may think of China, this is simply a fact.”

Musk, who has refused to manufacture Tesla cars in India unless the government is allowed to sell and provide service to its electric vehicles, has always praised China and its work culture.

Earlier this month, the Tesla CEO said that American people do not want to work while their Chinese counterparts are way better when it comes to finishing the job.

The world’s richest man, during the ‘Financial Times Future of the Car’ summit, said that China is a land of super-talented people.

“I think there will be some very strong companies coming out of China, there are just a lot of super-talented hardworking people in China who strongly believe in manufacturing,” he told the audience.

“They won’t just be burning the midnight oil, they will be burning the 3 a.m. oil, they won’t even leave the factory type of thing, whereas in America people are trying to avoid going to work at all,” Musk added.

Musk has also said that the proposed $44 billion acquisition of Twitter would not impact its operation in China.

Tesla Giga Shanghai currently hosts the final assembly of the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y.

Tesla is also building engineering and design teams.

Korean wins at Cannes a tribute to entertainment giant CJ ENM

Los Angeles, 30 May 2022 : Coming only three years after the Palme d’Or for ‘Parasite’, the two Cannes prizes for Park Chan-wook as best director and for Song Kang-ho as best actor are further proof of the strength of Korean cinema’s originality, its elevated skills and its resilience, reports ‘Variety’.

Korean movies have been temporarily overshadowed by K-pop and Korean TV dramas — think BTS and ‘Squid Game’ — both of which flourished during the Covid era, while Korean film was struck down by the pandemic.

Closed cinemas and disrupted release schedules meant that the film sector was not fully able to capitalise on the 2019 Cannes and multiple Oscar successes of ‘Parasite’ and ‘Minari’. Korean film producers’ revenues crumbled between 2020 and early this year, and talent shifted across to the more vibrant streaming sector.

In an insightful report on the creative forces at work behind the efflorescence of Korean cinema, ‘Variety’ notes that the Cannes prize for Park’s ‘Decision to Leave’ is particularly satisfying for a core group of filmmakers that also includes ‘Parasite’ director, and Park’s younger brother, Bong Joon Ho, “who have engaged with streaming platforms, but see themselves as filmmakers first”. This particularly tight cluster of leading names consists of a group who are friends rather than rivals.

Saturday’s Cannes wins, according to ‘Variety’, are also a vindication for Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM, which was partly responsible for Korean culture’s modern incarnation, and which has been in the Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon Ho business for more than 20 years.

CJ ENM was a founder investor in Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks SKG in 1995 and then found itself doubling down in the sector as a pioneer distributor in Korea and builder of the country’s first multiplex cinemas.

“Having created the distribution capacity and exhibition infrastructure, the company found itself increasingly pulled into production and production finance, needing to keep the feature films flowing, meet the government’s content quotas and industrialize a business that barely existed a decade earlier,” writes ‘Variety’,

CJ Entertainment was a producer of Park’s 2000 breakout film ‘Joint Security Area’, and financier of his astonishing 2003 picture ‘Oldboy’, which won Cannes’ second prize, the Grand Prix. CJ was also aboard Bong’s second title ‘Barking Dogs Never Bite’ in 2000 and his ‘Memories of Murder’ in 2003, ‘Variety’ adds.(IANS)

Matthew Morrison won’t be judging ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

Los Angeles, 30 May 2022: Dancer-singer-actor Matthew Morrison, who was announced as the new judge on the hit dance competition series ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ in April, has exited the show after he failed to follow production protocols, reports ‘Deadline’.

Commenting on the same, Morrison told ‘Deadline’, “Having the opportunity to be a judge on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ was an incredible honour for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show (sic).”

“After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly. I cannot apologise enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet (sic),” he added.

Cat Deeley serves as host of the long-running series that features skilled dancers in the age group of 18-30, showcasing their talents in various dance styles. The series, produced by Industrial Media’s 19 Entertainment and MRC, will see Rosie Seitchik serving as showrunner and executive producing alongside co-creator Lythgoe, Jeff Thacker, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman.

French Open: Zverev overcomes Miralles to reach quarterfinals

0

Paris, 30 May 2022: World No 3 Alexander Zverev reached the French Open quarterfinals after beating Spanish qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles, here on Sunday.

Zverev clinched a marathon opening set in a dramatic tie-break and was forced to recover from a break down in the second before going on to seal a 7-6(11), 7-5, 6-3 triumph over the No 131-ranked Miralles.

Miralles was making his first appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal and despite a nervy start the Spaniard looked at home on the big stage. He capitalised on any drop in level from Zverev to ensure the German was never comfortable but the World No 3’s greater firepower was ultimately enough to take him to a two-hour, 45-minute win.

Despite lacking consistency throughout, it was Zverev’s ability to hit through the ball off both wings that proved the difference on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

He struck 34 winners to just 13 from Zapata Miralles, but Zverev will hope to reduce on his unforced error count of 63 for his quarter-final match up with Carlos Alcaraz or Karen Khachanov.

A semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2021, Zverev now has a 16-4 record on clay in 2021 but is yet to pick up a title this year. The five-time ATP Masters 1000 champion is hunting a maiden Grand Slam in Paris, where he has now reached the quarter-finals four times.

Winning IPL 2022 trophy is high point of my career: Rashid Khan

30 May 2022: Leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who kept things tight with 1/18 in his four overs during the final against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, calls clinching the IPL 2022 trophy ‘a high point’ of his career.

“We assessed the wicket well; we knew it would be hard to chase down 150. Everyone had to take responsibility, we did well to come back well in the middle overs. He is the only guy whom we didn’t want to bowl to and I’m happy that he’s part of our team (on Shubman Gill).”

The same sentiment was echoed by Gill, who survived two dropped chances and finished off the innings to remain unbeaten at 45 off 43 balls. “It means a lot. After winning the under-19 World Cup, winning the IPL is just as big. It is my fourth year. I wanted to be there till the end and that was the talk with the coaches. Glad I took them over the line.”

“(Pandya) He’s been very relaxed; we’ve had a very good bond with Ashish (Nehra) and Hardik. He’s got better and better as the competition gone on, tactically he’s been brilliant. Just grown from strength to strength.”

Ahmedabad, 30 May 2022:  Gary Kirsten, the mentor of Gujarat Titans, was understandably a happy man after the side defeated Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in front of a roaring home crowd of 1,04,859 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

In a tournament which almost ran for two months, Gujarat made big splashes by being the most consistent side, topping the table, securing a direct ticket to the final and eventually winning the trophy.

“It’s fantastic, really happy for the guys, they’ve put a lot into the tournament, great for Ashish (Nehra, head coach) and Vikram (Solanki, director of cricket) as well. You’re looking for good balance, good depth in the auction but most importantly you’re looking for players who can different roles, the one thing we’ve learnt with Ashish is finding guys who were versatile, and at 4, 5 and 6 – we’ve got that,” said Kirsten to broadcasters Star Sports after the match.
