Extramarital Affair results in public assaults; Tripura Couple caught and tiled to electric pole

A man and a woman in Tripura were tied to an electric pole on Saturday and publicly humiliated for hours over an alleged relationship. The man is married and has two children, while the woman is a 20-year-old who lives with her cousin brother, and sister-in-law. Videos of the assault have gone viral on social media.

In the video, an elderly woman pulls the woman’s hair and hits her repeatedly, with the man tied to the same electric pole. A group of people can be seen watching the assault, but nobody appears to help. Another man animatedly wags his finger and verbally chastises the couple.

The incident is from Belonia town in the South Tripura district.

The married man was allegedly found to be engaged in a romantic relationship with a 20-year-old woman from the same area. Locals caught them together on Saturday morning and tied them to the pole for a “shalishi baithak”- an impromptu public trial through a Kangaroo court.

The police later arrived and intervened to release the victims.

None of the parties involved, including the injured man and woman, chose to file any formal complaints, though the police have registered a case and an investigation is underway.

The cousin brother of the young woman has been taken into custody, and her sister-in-law is accused of physical assault.

Discontentment Protest Grows as majority Kokborok News Channels Unite Against ICA Department’s Discriminatory Advertisement Distribution

Khumulwng, Tripura: The hills and villages of Tripura have been witness to an extraordinary display of unity among media persons, news channels, and concerned citizens as they protest against the alleged discriminatory practices of the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) department under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) administration.

In recent times, Tiprasa reporters and media professionals have been tirelessly working to highlight the pressing issues faced by the hills and the local Tiprasa population. Their aim has been to bring these concerns to the forefront of the TTAADC government’s agenda, thereby fostering holistic development and better livelihoods for the people residing in these areas. Multiple news channels have dedicated themselves to support the developmental efforts of the TTAADC government, spreading positivity among the masses.

However, the recent distribution of government advertisements only among four specific news channels has raised questions and eyebrows within the media community. This selective allocation of advertisements appears to favor a handful of news channels while leaving out a significant number of others. As per Tripura state government’s advertisement policy, only the news channels enlisted under ICA are entitled to receive government advertisements.

Interestingly, a disconcerting trend has emerged within the ICA department where non-enlisted news channels, seemingly chosen arbitrarily, were granted work orders for telecasting government advertisements. This move has sparked an outcry, as it prompts the query: if non-enlisted channels can secure work orders, why should over 20 Tiprasa news channels be excluded from this government facility? Many media professionals, organizations, and individuals have united to challenge this apparent discrepancy.

In a unanimous voice of dissent, these stakeholders argue that fairness and equal opportunity should be the guiding principles of government advertisement distribution. The alleged divide and rule policy adopted by the ICA department has left a vast majority of news channels feeling marginalized and deprived of rightful opportunities. This discriminatory practice contradicts the fundamental principles of a just and inclusive society.

Organizations and news channels have come together to denounce the ICA department’s actions, labeling them as shameful and unjust. The frustration and discontentment have been building up for years, leading to this current unrest. The media community, which has long been the voice of the people, is determined to demand transparency, equity, and accountability from the ICA department.

Interestingly, after a new government came into power in ADC, a promise with an initiative was taken that within three or few more months a new advertisement policy would be introduced where all the media persons and news channels owners would benefit from. But like three years have passed, many meeting was held, but still there is no sign of introducing or applying new advertisement policy in ICA, TTAADC.

In response to these developments, media professionals have initiated steps to launch a mass movement that aims to secure justice for all Tiprasa news channels. The movement underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and equal opportunities for every stakeholder within the media ecosystem. As the unity among media persons and organizations grows stronger, it is clear that the ICA department’s practices are being brought under scrutiny, and a robust demand for reform is taking shape.

With the hills of Tripura reverberating with calls for fairness and justice, the media community’s resilience and determination remain unshaken. The coming days are poised to witness a wave of protest and a powerful demand for change that will echo throughout the region.

TIPRA Motha suspends senior leader Abu Khayer Miah for ‘pro-BJP stance’

0

The Opposition TIPRA Motha Sunday suspended senior leader Abu Khayer Miah from the party for six months for violating party discipline. Miah had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections held earlier this year as a TIPRA Motha candidate from the Boxanagar seat.

Miah’s suspension comes at a time when preparations are underway in the state for bypolls to two Assembly seats including Boxanagar.

While the TIPRA Motha has not put up any candidate in the bypolls, nor has it yet supported any other party, it suspended Miah after he publicly supported BJP candidates.

The Opposition leader also said Miah would not be able to participate in any party program during his suspension period.

Advocating support for BJP candidates, Miah had argued that the bypolls do not pose any threat to the BJP government in Tripura and so voters should support the saffron party.

Tense calm between Israel, Islamic Jihad appears to hold, ending 5-day conflict

May 14: A tense ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in Gaza appeared to hold Sunday morning, following brief rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip late in the night and retaliatory Israel Defense Forces airstrikes after the 10 p.m. truce went into effect.

The Egyptian-brokered ceasefire put a stop to five days of intense fighting that saw over 1,200 rockets launched at Israel, with the Israeli military responding by targeting Islamic Jihad members, command centers, rocket launchers and capabilities in the Palestinian enclave.

Late Saturday, rocket alerts sounded in southern and central Israel, leading the IDF to launch retaliatory strikes in the Gaza Strip that the military said targeted two underground rocket launchers belonging to Islamic Jihad.

The Home Front Command told residents of communities near the Strip to remain near bomb shelters overnight and announced that restrictions on movements and gatherings for those within 40 kilometers (25 miles) of Gaza would lift at noon on Sunday.

Roads near the border that were shut for fear of anti-tank guided missile attacks reopened at 6 a.m. Sunday, following military assessments. Restrictions on residents beyond 40 kilometers from Gaza lifted at the same time.

Home Front Command rules have mandated school closures, work closures — unless employees have a bomb-safe room they can reach in time — and limits to outdoor gatherings to no more than 10 people for those near the Palestinian enclave. Indoor gatherings were restricted to 100 people in those areas.

Additionally, special education schools were permitted to operate in areas near Gaza, provided there is a bomb-safe room that school kids and teachers can reach in time.

The announcement may be a precaution though, given that Gazan terror groups have violated ceasefires in the past. IDF officer Hadar Goldin was killed by Hamas and his body was dragged into a tunnel during the 2014 Gaza war unfolded shortly after a ceasefire was supposed to have gone in place.

IPL 2023: Tom Moody says that Kohli’s passion drives every team that he’s part of

0

May 14: Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody believes that Virat Kohli’s passion drives every team that he’s part of and it is the same with Royal Challengers Bangalore in Indian Premier League.

Kohli has scored 420 runs in 11 matches so far in the ongoing IPL 2023 season and RCB will be hoping their star batter once again inspires them to win as they face a quality Rajasthan Royals side in Jaipur.

Both teams are heading into the game with contrasting results in their previous outings – Rajasthan Royals thrashed KKR by 9 wickets courtesy a Yashasvi Jaiswal special, whereas RCB were handed a thumping by Mumbai Indians, who chased down a 200-run target with 21 balls to spare.

“Virat Kohli is a very emotional and competitive player. It has been the case with several other greats of the game for it is their passion which drives them. Virat is one of those players, and such players also help the team bring out their best,” said Moody on Star Sports’ Cricket Live.

What RR’s easy win has done is given their NRR a significant boost, meaning if they win both their remaining games and finish tied (with one or more teams) on 16 points, they have a healthy NRR of 0.633 to fall back upon which is only the second best among the current top-four.

Ahead of their crucial game, Rajasthan Royals are at fifth spot with six wins in 12 matches while Royal Challengers Bangalore lie at seventh spot with five victories in 11 games. – IANS

‘The Kerala Story’ ban: ‘Watch the movie and then comment’ says Adah Sharma

May 14: As her film ‘The Kerala Story’ lands in controversy and is banned in several parts in the country, actress Adah Sharma, who plays a lead in the Sudipto Sen directorial, said that freedom of expression should be celebrated.

She insisting on watching the film before commenting on it.

On 8 May, the Government of West Bengal banned the movie allegedly to prevent any incident related to communal hatred and violence. The film was also stopped from screening in Tamil Nadu by the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association as “a precautionary measure.”

The Supreme Court on Friday had issued a notice to the West Bengal government seeking the reason behind the ban on ‘The Kerala Story’ in the state. The Supreme Court also asked the Tamil Nadu government to specify all the measures taken to provide security in theatres screening the film.

Talking about the same, Adah in a conversation with the media said: “I am not the authority but in my opinion we should celebrate freedom of expression and watch the movie and then everyone has a choice to decide if they want to comment positively or negatively about it.”

In the film, Adah plays the role of Fathima Ba, a Malayali Hindu nursing student, who goes missing from Kerala and is recruited to the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) after being lured to convert to Islam.

She added: “We should also honour the censor board who passed the film and the supreme court. Those who want to ban the film, if they watch it they might realise the film speaks against terrorism and they might decide to increase the screenings and show the film to more young girls.”

Cinema is a reflection of society; how does Adah feel politics mixing with it?

“We live in a democratic country, thankfully. Where there is freedom of speech and expression. Unlike the place where the character I play was taken to in the film. I’m very grateful I love it here in India.”

She pointed out to the “anti-terrorism” aspect of her film.

“It is humanity vs terrorism. It’s about being cheated in love. About why you shouldn’t rape someone. So any person from any place in the world supporting this film I think is a great thing!”

Adah has to say to those who don’t believe that something like this happened and forced conversations are not real: “They should Google two words ISIS brides and get an account of girls worldwide who have gone through this. Terrorism is a global issue.”

She added: “We haven’t had people who have watched the film and said these things don’t happen because our film even has testimonials of parents and victims. So maybe those who say terrorism doesn’t exist can watch our film and they might change their mind.”

‘The Kerala Story’ has been written and directed by Sudipto Sen and stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani.

It got into controversy after the trailer of the film stated that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS. – (IANS)

EV’s gearing for future after Diesel

0

May 14 : As India, which is the fourth largest car market globally, charts a new course for electric vehicles (EVs), the country still has EV penetration at only around 1 per cent (according to Moody’s) – and that too dominated by electric two-wheelers.

However, with the friendly government policies and new entrants arriving on the scene with cheaper EVs, the country is set to witness a plethora of options in the next 2-3 years.

Industry experts expect that passenger car EV penetration will cross 21 per cent by 2027 from 1.3 per cent in 2022.

Tata Motors is currently leading the Indian passenger electric vehicle (EV) market, followed by MG Motor, and Hyundai Motor.

Comet EV offers a certified battery range of around 230 km on a single charge. According to the company, the new Comet EV has been evaluated to provide an encouraging and economical charging cost of Rs 519 per month.

Maruti Suzuki is also working on developing its own battery technology before launching pure EV models.

Tata Motors has already established an operational battery plant, which has helped the company to reduce its EV price point.

As per CyberMedia Research (CMR), the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly, with a year-on-year growth rate of approximately 48 per cent in the first quarter of 2023.

The electric 2-wheeler (E2W) market grew by 44 per cent YoY. The electric 3-wheeler (E3W) market grew steadily covering around 50 per cent share within the segment.

“There is growing consumer awareness around connected vehicle technologies. For instance, connected vehicle tech has consistently increased its footprint in the industry,” said John Martin, senior analyst, smart mobility practice, CMR.

The electric passenger vehicle (EPV) segment grew over 114 per cent YoY in Q1 in India.

By Q1 2025, the EV market share in India is expected to surpass 24 per cent.

In its report, Moody’s Investors Service said last month that various government incentives will drive an increase in EV penetration.

“These include consumer incentives, production-linked incentives for advanced battery storage to drive local cell manufacturing, goods and services tax (GST) rate cuts, and other state-level subsidies,” the report said.

With the demand for affordable transportation and the focus on reducing carbon emissions, electric vehicles will play a vital role in India’s step towards a sustainable future.

Consumers are increasingly picking EVs, understanding that the total cost of ownership (TCO) is more favourable than their petrol counterparts, over 50 per cent for high usage such as delivery, according to a latest RedSeer report.

As of 2022, India’s overall EV penetration, including 2W, is 3 per cent and although the electrification of mobility in India is still at a nascent stage, “there is massive headroom for growth”, the report noted. – (IANS)
