3 killed, 5 injured at Michigan State University shootings; suspect found dead after hours long search

0

At least three people are dead and five others are injured after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University Monday night, police said.

Police say the suspect was later found dead off campus from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The announcement came early Tuesday, four hours after shootings were reported, first at Berkey Hall and then nearby at the MSU Union, a popular hub to eat or study.

“We are relieved to no longer have an active threat on campus,” said Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the campus police department. He reasserted that authorities believe the suspect acted alone in the incident and said the shelter-in-place on campus was lifted.

With the investigation ongoing, authorities are working to identify the suspect and are processing several different crime scenes.

Rozman said authorities received multiple calls of a shooting around 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. Police then immediately responded to a second shooting in “close proximity” to the Michigan State University Union.

“We tended to the victims at both of those scenes, and there was an overwhelming law enforcement response to campus,” Rozman said.

Michigan State University police confirmed three fatalities in addition to thefive victims who were transported to the E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

Multiple locations on the campus were cleared and secured as of 10:18 p.m., according to university police. The areas included Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall, the MSU Union, and Berkey Hall.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from local, state, and federal agencies responded to the shooting “in a coordinated effort,” Rozman said. A line of 10 ambulances was waiting outside the Broad Art Museum.

South Africa Beat New Zealand To Save Women’s World Cup Campaign

0

Paarl, Feb 14:

South Africa kept their semi-final hopes alive as they beat Group 1 rivals New Zealand at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, here.

A shock defeat to Sri Lanka on the opening day had left South Africa reeling, knowing they would have to beat at least one of Australia or New Zealand and potentially both in order to qualify for the final four, reports ICC.

And the Proteas massively boosted their semi-final chances with a brilliant display against a New Zealand side, who have now suffered two heavy defeats in the tournament.

Nonkululeko Mlaba (3/10) lit up the Powerplay, removing both of New Zealand’s openers for ducks, meaning that the White Ferns have returned 0/4 from their opening batters so far in this tournament.

Mlaba had Bernadine Bezuldenhout brilliantly stumped off just the second ball of the innings.

And the spinner was at it again in her second over, cleaning up Suzie Bates and celebrating in style.

Sophie Devine dropped herself from opener down to number five in the batting order, but the captain was out in the middle inside the Powerplay as Georgia Plimmer was caught off Marizanne Kapp.

The White Ferns were struggling on 13/3 in their chase of 133, and things went from bad to worse when Amelia Kerr edged behind to depart for 10 (12).

The Kiwis reached just 19/4 at the end of the Powerplay, and Chloe Tryon dismissed Maddy Green to leave New Zealand five down and relying hugely on Devine to bail them out at Boland Park.

But wickets continued to fall, and when Devine was trapped in front by Tryon the jig was all but up. And South Africa wrapped up the victory in the penultimate over, winning by 65 runs to give their net run rate a huge and potentially-crucial boost.

NASA, Partners Approve Four Crewmembers For Ax-2, Axiom Space’s Second Private Astronaut Mission To ISS

0

NASA and its international partners have approved the crew for Houston-based aerospace firm Axiom Space’s second private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS), targeted for launch in spring 2023. The mission, called Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2), is privately funded.

The crew members are former NASA astronaut and Axiom Space’s Director of Human Spaceflight Peggy Whitson, John Shoffner of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Whitson will command the mission, Shoffner will serve as pilot, and Alqarni and Barnawiho are members of the inaugural Saudi national astronaut program, will serve as mission specialists, and will fly through an arrangement between KSA and Axiom Space.

In a statement released by NASA, Angela Hart, manager of NASA’s Commercial Low-Earth Orbit Development Program, said enabling more people to go to space is an important component of NASA’s continuing efforts to grow the low-Earth orbit economy. She also said that private astronaut missions are a key component to enable a successful transition to a model of commercially owned and operated platforms in low-Earth orbit.

The four crew members will be launched into space in spring 2023, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. Once the Crew Dragon spacecraft is docked, the private astronauts will spend 10 days aboard the orbital outpost. During their stay, they will implement a full mission of science, outreach and commercial activities.

Ax-2 will be the first private space mission to include both private astronauts and astronauts representing foreign governments. It will also be the first private mission commanded by a woman.

Michael Suffredini, president and CEO of Axiom Space, said the aerospace firm’s second private astronaut mission to the ISS cements Axiom’s mission of expanding access to space worldwide and supporting the growth of low-Earth orbit economy as the firm builds Axiom Station.

He added that Ax-2 moves Axiom Space one step closer toward the realisation of a commercial space station in low-Earth orbit and enables the form to build on the legacy and achievements of the station, leveraging the benefits of microgravity to better life on Earth.

According to NASA, Whitson will become the first female commander of a private space station, and through Ax-2, she will add to her standing record for the longest cumulative time in space by a NASA astronaut. Other prior accomplishments of Whitson include serving as NASA’s Chief Astronaut, and the first female commander of the space station.

Whitson said she is honoured to be heading back to the station for the fourth time, leading the “talented Ax-2 crew” on their first mission. She also said this is a strong and cohesive team determined to conduct meaningful scientific research in space and inspire a new generation about the benefits of microgravity.

Shoffner is a businessman who has always had an interest in space, the stars, and flying. He became a pilot at the age of 17, and since then, he has amassed 8,500 flight hours and earned ratings for multiple aircraft types.

Axiom Mission 1, or Ax-1, was the first private astronaut mission to the ISS. The mission launched on April 8, 2022, with four private astronauts. The Ax-1 crew spent 17 days in orbit, and worked on 26 science payloads aboard the peace station. On April 25, 2022, the crew splashed down off the coast of Florida, marking the successful completion of the mission.

NASA aims to develop a thriving low-Earth orbit ecosystem and marketplace, and private astronaut missions are a precursor to these efforts. –IANS

Explosion in North Waziristan, 8 injured

0

Eight people, including women, suffered injuries in a bomb attack on a car carrying a wounded police official in the Ghulam Khan area along the border with Afghanistan on Sunday.

Unidentified people had attacked Assistant Sub-Inspector Aminullah inside his home at around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Dawn reported.

Officials said that the police official sustained injuries in the attack and was being shifted to the hospital in a car when a bomb near the vehicle went off.

“He was in the car and was about to be shifted when the explosion took place leaving eight people wounded,” a police official said, adding that two women were among the victims.

He said the injured were taken to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital in district Bannu and added that three of them were in critical condition.

The official said a police team had reached the scene of the occurrence and started investigating the attacks, Dawn reported.

Earlier on Saturday night, police in the Gomal Bazaar area of district Tank repulsed an attack on the police station following heavy exchange of fire with militants.

According to police officials, militants armed with latest weapons had stormed Gomal Bazaar Police Station. However, they said, the attack was repulsed since the police were ready to respond.

“We had already observed their [militants’] movement with the help of thermal imaging camera. They [militants] attacked the police station but police personnel responded to it immediately,” a police official told Dawn, adding that it was the fourth attack on the police in the district within a week.

Official sources said the number of attacking militants was between 13 and 15 and the exchange of fire continued for around 15 minutes. Heavy contingents of police immediately reached the spot, they said. However, no casualty was reported.

A statement issued from the office of the Inspector General Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Akhtar Hayat Gandapur read that the provincial police chief immediately contacted the station house officer and lauded bravery of the personnel. He announced cash reward and certificate for the police team that took part in the gunfight.

Meanwhile, police in district Lakki Marwat also repulsed a similar attack on a police post in the Bakhmal area.

“Police observed movement of a few suspects through the thermal imaging camera and started firing at them,” a senior police official told Dawn, adding that an exchange of fire took place between the police and militants during which the militants fled.
