A controversy erupted in Kolkata after a social media influencer alleged that a well-known restaurant on Park Street mistakenly served beef instead of mutton, triggering outrage among many Hindus who view the incident as a serious violation of religious and cultural beliefs.
YouTuber and actor Sayak Chakraborty shared a video claiming that he and his friends were served cow meat at the iconic Olypub, despite ordering mutton steak. According to him, the group consumed the dish believing it to be mutton, only to later realise it was beef—an issue of deep sensitivity for a large section of Hindus, for whom the cow is sacred.
In the video, Chakraborty is seen confronting the restaurant staff and expressing anguish over the lapse. He stated that the matter was not merely about a wrong order, but about disregard for religious sentiments and food practices that many Hindus strictly follow. “This is not just a mistake, this is about faith,” he said, questioning how such an error could occur at a reputed establishment.
Following the incident, a First Information Report was filed at Park Street police station. The waiter involved, identified as Sheikh Nasiruddin, was reportedly arrested under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
The episode has since sparked a wider discussion online, with many Hindus demanding greater accountability from restaurants, clearer menu disclosures, and respect for religious dietary restrictions. At the same time, several voices have urged calm, calling for the issue to be addressed through lawful and fair processes without communal hostility.
The restaurant management has not yet issued a detailed public statement on how the alleged mix-up occurred.
