22 Sept 2022: President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan once again raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in the UN General Assembly. Meanwhile, Erdogan did this despite strong objections from India. In this situation, India has also raised the issue of Cyprus with Turkey. Not only that, within a few hours of Erdogan’s statement, Indian Foreign Minister S. S. Jaishankar met Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and presented the issue of Cyprus.
Meanwhile, Jaishankar also tweeted about this meeting. He wrote, “Meet the Turkish Foreign Minister and discussed several issues with him. Among them were discussions about the crisis in Ukraine. Also, the topic of food security, G20 countries and Cyprus were included.” Indeed, the Cyprus issue has always been a sore point for Turkey. In this situation, in the context of talking about Kashmir, India has also raised the issue of Cyprus. Naturally, India’s diplomacy is seen as a befitting response to Turkey’s Kashmir issue.
It should be noted that the Cyprus crisis started in 1974 when Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied its northern part. Meanwhile, the situation in Cyprus began to deteriorate as a result of the military coup and Turkey seized it. Since then, India has been supporting the matter so that it can be resolved through discussion with the United Nations.
India Raises Cyprus Issue: It may be noted that India has always had good relations with Cyprus. Besides, they have been supporting India’s position on the Kashmir issue for the last 5 decades. Meanwhile, while addressing the United Nations a few hours before the meeting between Jaishankar and the Turkish foreign minister, Erdogan said, “India and Pakistan have passed 75 years of independence and sovereignty. But till now there is no peaceful relationship between the two countries. It is unfortunate. We hope that the Kashmir issue will be resolved and there will be lasting peace.” Meanwhile, in the past few years, the Turkish President has raised the Kashmir issue in the UN General Assembly several times.
Turkey also did this in 2020 and 2021: earlier in 2021, Erdogan said, referring to Kashmir, that “we hope both sides will resolve this issue peacefully.” Besides, he highlighted this issue in 2020 as well. However, both times India responded well. In this context, recently, Turkish President Erdogan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Basically, Turkey is currently going through a deep economic crisis. In this case, their meeting is seen as an attempt to develop business relations.
